A Hybrid Animal Between a Dog and a Fox Discovered for the First Time in Brazil

By animal9059

Have you ever heard of the “dogxim”? This fascinating hybrid, a cross between a dog and a fox, was first discovered in Brazil in 2021 after being hit by a car and taken to a veterinarian.

An Exceptionally Rare Animal

At the time, the veterinary staff couldn’t determine whether the young female was a dog or a fox. Local university scientists conducted extensive genetic tests and revealed that she was both: her mother was a pampas fox, and her father was a domestic dog.

In a study published in the journal Animals, researchers detailed that the young female had 76 chromosomes, a perfect blend of the pampas fox’s 74 chromosomes and the dog’s 78 chromosomes. Physically, she exhibited a mix of characteristics from both species: large pointed ears, thick and coarse fur, and a long, slender muzzle.

Unique Behavior and Characteristics

Behaviorally, she was quite wary of humans but remained friendly enough to be petted. She barked like a dog and occasionally played with toys provided for her. However, she moved like a fox and only accepted live rodents as food.

Flávia Ferrari, an environmental advocate who worked with the animal during her recovery and participated in the study, shared with The Telegraph, “She was an incredible animal, truly a hybrid between a pampas fox and a dog. She wasn’t as docile as a dog, but she also lacked the expected aggression of a wild canid when handled.”

Ferrari added, “This female had a shy and cautious personality, generally preferring to stay away from people. Over time, as she was hospitalized for treatment, I think she began to feel more secure.”

Potential for More Hybrids?

Sadly, the female dogxim passed away earlier this year from unknown causes. However, scientists believe she might have been capable of reproducing.

It’s important to note that domestic dogs have previously interbred with wild species, such as coyotes, wolves, and dingoes. This hybridization highlights the complex interactions between domestic and wild canids, opening doors to further research and understanding of these unique genetic blends.
