Recently, Lorene Cross and her husband were en route to the dump when something unusual caught her eye. At the end of their long driveway, two strange bags lay abandoned. Cross, the founder of SMART Animal Sanctuary & Rehoming Centre, initially considered leaving the bags for later, assuming they were just misplaced trash. But a nagging feeling prompted her to check them out immediately.
A Startling Discovery
Curiosity got the best of her, and Cross decided to stop the car and investigate. As she approached the bags, she noticed they were securely zip-tied. With a sense of urgency, she opened them, and to her heartbreak, they were not filled with garbage.
Inside the bags were two terrified roosters. Cross had encountered animals left at her sanctuary’s entrance before, but the sight of these living creatures discarded like refuse was particularly shocking.
Timely Intervention
Cross captured the rescue on video, showcasing the moment the roosters were freed. Once out of the bags, the birds wasted no time exploring the grass, visibly relieved to be free.
“The roosters were happy to get out of the bags,” Cross recounted. “It was starting to get a little warm and humid.”
Providing Immediate Care
Cross quickly provided food and water for the roosters and temporarily housed them at her sanctuary. Determined to find them a safe home, she reached out to her network and soon found a suitable place for the roosters with a friend of the sanctuary.
A Happy Ending
Now settled in their new home, the roosters are thriving. They finally have the life they deserve, surrounded by other birds and plenty of space to roam.
“They both enjoyed their stay here,” Cross shared. “[They’re] now rehomed with lots of girls to keep them happy.”
